New research is being undertaken to develop a biological control for carp that could reduce Australia’s carp population by up to 80 per cent. The virus takes about six days to incubate in the body and effects the gills, within 24 hours of showing symptoms the fish will die.
To date, Dr Dean Gilligan from the Freshwater Pests Research Program says there have been no instances of the virus affecting any other species other than carp.
